🌸 Flower Farming in Dural and Kenthurst: A Century-Old Tradition Still Blooming Today

flower farming is in our roots

When you think of the Hills District, images of leafy lanes, sprawling gardens, and roadside farm stalls come to mind. But what many don’t realise is that flower farming has been at the heart of this region for over 100 years — quietly shaping the local community and landscape we know and love.

At Bohemian Buds, we’re proud to be a part of this rich agricultural legacy — one that runs deep in our family roots and informs everything we do as a florist.

A Hills District Tradition

From Kenthurst to Glenorie, Dural to Castle Hill, the Hills has long been known for its productive farmland. Long before it became a destination for wedding venues and acreages, this region was full of hardworking families who grew everything from citrus and stone fruit to—yes—blooms.

Flower farms began cropping up in the early 20th century, thriving thanks to the area’s fertile soil, gentle climate, and community spirit. Local growers would rise before dawn to cut and sort stems, often selling their flowers at the Sydney Flower Market or right from the farm gate. That tradition continues today, and we’re lucky enough to work closely with many of these multigenerational flower farmers.

Our Family’s Farming Roots

The family business

Flower farming isn’t just a business for us — it’s part of our family’s story.
My husband’s family — the Blacks — were stone fruit growers in Glenorie, and still hold farmland in the area. Generations of our family have grown up surrounded by paddocks, farming, and the beautiful, messy rhythms of the land.

Because of these deep roots, Bohemian Buds has forged trusted relationships with local growers, many of whom we’ve known since childhood. We don’t just know where the flowers are coming from — we often know the people who planted them.

Locally Grown

That connection means:

  • Our flower delivery clients get first pick of the freshest local blooms

  • We can source unique, in-season varieties that imported flowers just can’t compete with

  • Our weddings and arrangements reflect the true local landscape.
