A Flower Care Guide: How to Keep Your Bohemian Buds Blooming

Flower Care Tips: Make your flowers stay fresh for longer

At Bohemian Buds, we believe every bouquet tells a story — crafted with love and sustainably sourced blooms from our local Dural, Glenorie, Kenthurst, Annangrove and Glenhaven farms. Whether your bouquet is a gift or a treat to yourself, you deserve to enjoy it for as long as possible. Follow our easy, flower-friendly tips to keep your fresh-cut flowers looking lush and lovely. To keep your flowers fresh and vibrant:

Choose the best flowers for longer life

1. Freshness Starts at the Source
When it comes to long-lasting flowers, freshness is everything. And it all begins with where you buy your blooms. Choosing a local florist (like us!) over supermarket stems means your flowers are fresher, handled with care, and haven’t spent days in transit or cold storage.

Even the freshest flowers have a natural lifespan—after all, they’re living things. While we lovingly craft every Bohemian Buds bouquet with premium, seasonal blooms, nature runs her own timeline. Most of our arrangements will stay fresh and fabulous for around 5 to 7 days with the right care.

2. Choose wisely.
Some flowers, like cosmos, dahlias and zinneas can be impressive, but have a shorter lifespan. Enjoy them, and once they fade remove them from the vase to ensure your more hardy flowers continue to bloom. If you’re after something longer lasting, we recommend non-reflexed roses, natives and orchids.

3. Give them a fresh start
Your bouquet will be beautifully wrapped in eco paper and ribbon with a recycled water bubble. When your flowers arrive, unwrap the bouquet to ensure the flowers and stems do not rot. Do not cut the string - your florals have been artfully designed and held in place with the twine. Trim about 2cm off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This helps them soak up more water and stay hydrated. The angle provides more surface space to absorb water.

4. Clean vase, clean stems, happy blooms
Grab your favourite vase, give it a good wash, and rinse it well. A clean vase means fewer nasties (like bacteria) that can shorten your flowers' life. Before popping your flowers in, remove any leaves below the waterline. These speed up the bacteria growth, causing rot and causing your flowers to smell.

5. Fill it up with fresh, cool water
Top your vase with fresh, room-temperature water. Refresh the water every two days and give stems a little snip each time to help them keep drinking.

6. Keep it cool (literally)
Display your flowers in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight, heaters, and air-con. The cooler they are, the longer they’ll stay vibrant.

7. No fruit bowls nearby
Ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which isn’t great for fresh flowers. Keep your arrangement away from fruit bowls to extend its beauty.

8. Take time to tend to your blooms.

Some blooms, like roses, come with what's known as guard petals—those outermost few petals that protect the flower as it grows. Gently removing them will help your rose open up beautifully and show off its full charm.

After your first trim and vase setup, take a moment each day to check in on your flowers. Remove any wilted petals or leaves that have dropped into the water—this small act helps prevent bacteria from building up and keeps your bouquet fresher for longer.

It’s all part of the ritual—slow down, tend to your flowers, and let them flourish. 🌿
